About Washington English Center
Washington English Center (WEC), a DC-based nonprofit organization, is looking for volunteers to teach English to immigrants and refugees! Join our community of over 350 volunteers to teach either online or in person in downtown DC. No prior experience is required, as you will be paired with a co-teacher and receive support from our staff. You can also sign up to be an online conversation or writing tutor. WEC serves several hundred adult language learners, including many recently resettled refugees from Afghanistan, Ukraine, and Venezuela. As a WEC volunteer, you’ll have the opportunity to be exposed to new cultures, attend free teacher trainings, and meet like minded people at volunteer socials throughout the term.
Duties
Hello! The Washington English Center (WEC), a DC-based nonprofit organization, is looking for volunteers to co-teach, substitute teach, or tutor ESOL to adult immigrants and refugees this Summer! WEC serves several hundred adult language learners each term from over 80 different countries. Join our community of over 400 volunteers to teach online and/or in person in downtown DC! As a WEC volunteer, you’ll have the opportunity to engage with diverse cultures, attend free teacher training, and connect with others at in-person and online volunteer socials throughout the term. No prior teaching experience is required! You’ll be paired with a co-teacher and receive ongoing training and support from our staff. ESOL group classes start July 13th and run through August 19th, 2026. Our one-on-one tutoring sessions happen on a rolling basis and have flexible start and end dates. Please note, if you are interested in co-teaching we ask that you sign up by June 27th to receive a placement or waitlist information on July 1st.
Qualifications
All Volunteers must: ✓ be 18 years old or older ✓ be a proficient English speaker (non-native speakers welcome) ✓ make a 11-week teaching OR 11-session tutoring commitment ( 1-3 hours once a week) ✓ attend training before each session ✓ have regular access to email ✓ have the desire to work with adults from different cultural, educational, and economic backgrounds
